The Art of the Remix with Mikael Johnston

Coming this Summer. 15 hours $400.

Remixing is the art of taking elements from an already produced composition to create a unique interpretation of the song. Teaching the class is Mikael Johnston who under the moniker Dresden and Johnston had his remixes of Lily Allen’s “The Fear” and Nadia Ali’s “Love Story” both hit #1 in Billboard Magazine’s Hot Dance Club Play Chart in March of 2009. The class will deconstruct remixes done by the instructor for current major label recording artists including Lily Allen, BT, The Crystal Method and Owl City. Techniques that will be covered will include:

• unique uses of synthesis
• sampling and automation
• picking appropriate original elements
• conforming a tracks to a new bpm
• chopping audio to create things like stutter and glitch effects
• Pitch shifting and time based effects including pitch correction
• choosing components to use from the original composition

Mixing workshop with Michael Rosen

Sunday July 11th, 18th & 25th, 12pm-5pm $400

This workshop focuses on the basic principles of mixing. This includes equalization, dynamic processing, efffects processing, use of outboard gear, use of plugins and stereo imaging techniques.
